“Do you think that tomorrow I could come out to the barn and have tea with you and Beth?”
“Yes!” but then Violet got a little worried and added “You do know we are not allowed to have real tea, right? We just pretend with the water.” She was so hoping that her Aunt grace would still want to come.
“I think that will be just fine and I am looking forward to meeting Beth. But I have two more questions are you ready?”
“Yes!”
“When you are out in the barn, do you ever see a big black bird?”
“Yes, the crow! He comes and watches us play and sometimes he steals food from the chickens. Mom does not like that and tells him to go away. I like the crow and I even asked daddy if I can have one of my very own, but he says crows belong to the world and not to people and I should just be happy with the one I see at the barn.”
Aunt Grace just listened and nodded and when Violet finished she said “You’re lucky to have a smart father, he is right crow is not a pet and not something you keep. Ok last question what would you say if I told you that I have a gift for you?”
“Really? That would be wonderful, thank you!” Violet was so excited she was bouncing more then she was sitting.
Grace was laughing as she said “ok come on now, lets settle down before your mother comes up and says the gifts will have to wait till tomorrow.” The very thought of having to wait until tomorrow made Violet sit still and be quiet!
Violet took a breath and was holding it as she watched her Aunt reach into a deep pocket in the side of her skirt. ©
